Is Banana Bread Worth the Calories?

Kitchen Scoop reader K. Allen wants to make our Chocolate Chip Banana Bread – even though she knows it’ll head straight for the hips. I feel her pain! I’m constantly having to use my yardstick for whether or not to eat something yummy – “Is It Worth The Calories”?
In younger days the question wasn’t so crucial: Calories came and calories went. But at a certain age they gather in the most unattractive way, cluttering the thighs and shouting at me from the headlines of every women’s magazine: Do You Have Heart Attack Fat?!
But back to Banana Bread. Certainly we could figure out how make it with applesauce instead of butter. It might even taste pretty good. But knowing me, I’d probably just figure I could eat two slices instead of one and the caloric damage would be done all the same.
Perhaps it’s a matter of self-control. Eat the really yummy stuff only twice a year and move to a monastery the rest of the time. Or spend three hours a day at the gym doing penance for my three minutes of bliss. Frankly, I’m perplexed. But I have to tell you, in the case of Chocolate Chip Banana Bread, my Yardstick tends to bend.
