Restaurant dining alone: Great or Grueling?

Do you ever eat “out” by yourself? I have always avoided it and yet recently I found myself in downtown Richmond, alone for the afternoon, waiting to head back to Raleigh.

It was a beautiful, sunny, breezy Southern day. The kind that only comes along for a few short days before the humidity sets in. It was just too pretty to stay in the hotel complex (as nice as it was). I headed down to the historic Shockoe Slip area and saw the most inviting of settings – a shady deck at Sine Irish Pub. (Check them out if you are ever in the area.)

I wandered in and promptly set myself up on the porch for 3 hours. It was glorious. Of course the food and drink were part of the appeal and were exactly what I was craving, but I actually loved being all by myself. Have you ever eaten or stopped at a wonderful place for a drink all by yourself? Why or why not? Where?

Many years of being single and traveling on business got me use to eating in restaurants alone. Now married and not traveling as frequently, I still enjoy eating out on occassion by myself. I always have a book to read and find it very enjoyable to be able to have a great meal in a nice setting with someone to wait on me. I think having reading material made me feel comfortable and not self conscious that I was alone when most everyone else had a dinner companion.

I sometimes wonder if the table location makes a difference. Or maybe whether I'm driving or not so I can have wine!

At times it is a nice change. I can people watch without worrying about ignoring my companion. Not something that I want to do often.
