Top 5 Tips for Easy Kitchen Cleanup

In Kitchen Basics
1. Read through a recipe before cooking to see if there are any needless dishes or pots and pans used.
2. Peel vegetables such as onions and carrots over a paper towel, plastic vegetable bag (the kind from the produce section) or directly over the trash can. If you use the bag or paper towel, with a couple folds and swipes, the trimmings are history.
3. Line the bottom of the toaster oven with foil to catch drips that can make a huge mess. (Change as needed.) Or when roasting a chicken and you're not planning to make gravy, line the pan with foil and just throw away those baked on juices.
4. Mix vinaigrette directly in the serving bowl and then put salad greens on top. A couple of deep tosses with salad tongs distributes the dressing and you're left with one less bowl to clean.
5. Fill a sink with warm sudsy water and let pans soak while you eat for faster cleanup after dinner.
So what are we forgetting?

Because I have a septic tank, I don't intentionally put anything down the garbage disposal. So to keep the trash from getting smelly until trash day, I freeze my garbage. I keep a plastic bag in the freezer & put all scraps in there. I have an extra freezer & when I have large items like a turkey carcass, cantaloupe peel or corn cobs, they go out to the garage freezer. Then weekly I tie up the bag(s) & add it to the trash. Garbage pops!

Cleaning up the kitchen is part of cooking. Not only is it easier to cook and bake in a clean kitchen, but clean surfaces and storage containers will keep your family healthier and safer.

Another one I can't seem to get in the routine for, but helps tremendously, is to make sure the dishwasher is emptied when finished it's cycle. It's so much easier for everyone to rinse and add their dishes throughout the day instead of piling them in the sink. Now that my girls are home from their summer travels and about ready to go back to school, I wish I had made a concerted effort to either assign the duty of emptying the dishwasher or taken care of it myself before heading off to work each morning....My kitchen would have stayed a whole bunch neater these past three weeks!
