We love Greek yogurt. Do you?

Have you tried Greek yogurt yet? We love it because it’s so creamy that even the fat-free varieties taste sinful.

Greek yogurt, called yiaourti in Greece, is made by draining off the whey (the watery substance) that naturally occurs when yogurt is made from milk. It has about twice the protein of regular yogurt, less lactose, and fewer carbs.

Several brands of Greek yogurt (some organic) are now available in American supermarkets, and you’ll find it plain and flavored. Greek yogurt is a bit more expensive than traditional yogurt, but because it’s richer, we tend to use less.

If you’d like to try and make your own Greek yogurt by draining the whey from regular yogurt, here’s a Web site with the instructions. (Click here.)

If you've tried Greek yogurt, we'd love to hear what you think.

Umm! I love Greek yogurt. I ate so much regular yogurt when I was pregnant that I can't stand the stuff. I just wish Greek yogurt wasn't so expensive.

Greek yogurt's popularity means it is making it's way to the warehouse stores. Check out Costco, Sam's and BJ's for deals. Also, Trader Joe's has their own brand that is very good (and cheap) if you have a TJ's near you.

Here is an easy way to drain the whey from regular yogurt. Place a funnel inside a glass jar. Then place a paper coffee filter inside the funnel. After the filter is firmly in place, spoon the regular yogurt into the filter. Cover with plastic wrap and place in safe spot in refrigerator. In a very short time, you will have thick creamy yogurt which can be used in recipes et.
