In Coffee and Convo
Tell us your secret craving -- the thing you can’t do without. That food that comforts you when you are down and that you turn to when you want to celebrate.
Mine has to be Krispy Kreme donuts, but only when they are hot off the line, freshly drowned in glaze and ready to simply melt away, light as cotton candy.
My craving withers like a potted impatiens in the hot afternoon sun if the “Hot Donut Now” sign isn’t on.
A few years back I was in London when the first Krispy Kreme opened in Harrod’s. No, I didn’t go just for that spectacular occasion, but I did I make a bee-line straight there. Ahhh! A little taste of home in the middle of London! I couldn’t resist.
So now I’ve confessed. What’s your secret craving?

When Alicia was a small child, we would stop on the way home as we passed the KK store at the corner of Independence Blvd. and Hawthorne Lane in Charlotte, NC. We seldom bought more than a dozen because.... They were hot, delicious and soon gone BEFORE we could get home. No wonder I would really like to have a few (more than one) right now!!!

I'll have to admit that I'm fickle when it comes to my junk food obsessions. I'll get hung up on something for a while & then OD on it & move to a new favorite. I've never not wanted chocolate, though!

I am right there with you on the chocolate, but it's not really junk food anymore, is it? Doesn't it cure cancer and heart disease and just about everything else?!

I'm not of the sweets obsession, although a melt in the mouth KK donut is something we lack up here in upstate New York. I'm a deep fried junkie. I have strange deep fried cravings, we're not talking run of the mill french fries, potato chips - that's boring. I crave things like vegetable egg rolls, fried raviolis, deep fried cauliflower with blue cheese dressing, yum. My aunt and uncle in the Atlanta area go to Tanner's Chicken where they have these Chicken Lips - egg rolls stuffed with chicken and cheese, I love mine dipped in their bbq sauce. Thank god I don't crave sweets or everything I wear would require elastic waist bands, lol!!

I haven't eaten them in years, but we used to stop by the same KK in Charlotte to get hot doughnuts...and I can't tell you how many times we picked up dozens of boxes for school fundraisers! No other doughnut can compare!
From James Brady - December 08, 2009
Yes, Myra. I had forgotten about the fundraisers where we had the young people go door-to-door and sell them for summer trips, etc. Of course, we ate most of the profits - not really; we bought more than we ate because some people wanted them but had little or no money, so we gave them away. But I have never seen anyone eat a KK donut without a smile on their face.

Last night we passed the KK doughnut shop on 163rd St. in North Miami. The "Hot Now" sign was flashing and it was all I could do to keep the car on the straight and narrow. I literally ache for a warm KK. No Dunkin's for me!!
