Quick Chocolate “Fondue” with Strawberries

Recipe Directions

2 to 3 pounds whole strawberries*
1 container (16 ounces) milk chocolate frosting, such as Ducan Hines
2 tablespoons liqueur of choice, such as triple sec, kirsch, amaretto, or Frangelico*
Toothpicks, for serving

Rinse and drain strawberries (not capped) and arrange on a platter or decorative bowl.

Put frosting in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave, covered with a paper towel, on high, stirring and testing at 30-second intervals, until very warm but not hot, about 45 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes. Remove and stir in liqueur of choice.

Serve immediately: Spoon a little chocolate sauce into individual serving bowls (or use plates) and spear strawberries with toothpicks, bamboo skewers, or fondue forks and dip into the chocolate, fondue-style. Replenish chocolate as necessary. If chocolate cools, microwave to reheat as before.

* Cooking Notes

Other fruit can be used, such as pineapple chunks, tart apple slices or pears. Or cut squares of pound cake (we like Sara Lee frozen all-butter pound cake, but defrost before serving).

For an alcohol-free version, substitute milk or half and half or orange juice.

Backstory

OK, a can of frosting does seem a bit odd, we know. But when our Desperation Entertaining editor asked us to come up with several dessert ideas that could be done in five minutes, we really had to put on our thinking caps! Once we got past fruit, fruit and more fruit, we turned to frosting.
